It’s Mariya, not Maria…
To those who still insist that the main character should be named Shidou Maria because the title has Maria in it, please jump off a cliff.
This and this should make it very obvious that his name is Mariya in English.
The “Maria” from the title comes from 聖母マリア (Seibo Maria), who we call the Holy Mother Mary in English.
There isn’t a Maria running around in Maria-sama ga Miteiru either.

well I was looking through the translated manga and they used Maria

I’d like to point out that Minari Endoh INTENTIONALLY MISSPELLS english names to make them look cooler (real life example include changing Clair to Clare and Shelby to Shelbie). Also, it was done to poke fun at the Christian/Catholic references, so his name was probably changed to avoid offending the (LARGE) Catholic population of Japan, while still making the joke. Meaning, Maria, while not correct, is not incorrect.

祇堂 鞠也 is not an English name. It’s Japanese.
Romanizing 鞠也 in any manner, OTHER than Mariya shows a lack of Hiragana knowledge when the Furigana マリヤ is placed next to the name.
And for the last time, the “Maria” in the title refers to Mother Mary. A direct, Christian reference.
Maria-sama ga Miteiru == yuri light novel.
Maria Holic = poke fun of yuri.

The reason why Endou Minari use Mariya instead of Maria is not important here, because she does intend the name to be Mariya.

And, yes, i know that the title is referring to the Madonna, and Konno’s novels. It’s pretty obvious it’s a yuri parody.
By that logic John should be spelled Yochanan since it’s derived from the Hebrew name, and hence is not an English name.
Guess I’ve to e-mail people like Ms. Takeuchi Mariya here that their name are not Japanese enough. :/
Put it this way, if you knew Japanese you’d know for sure that “Mariya” is right and “Maria” is wrong.

Get some reading comprehension. Shidou Mariya is a Japanese name, not a Hebrew one. You don’t seem to have it straight it your head that what you’re reading is a transliteration and not a “real English/Hebrew name”.
*sighs* I believe I said, “Maria is not correct” i just said it isn’t incorrect. And it’s not how is the name is spelled, it’s the actual name. Names come in different forms, but they are all the same name. My name is Maria and I spell it Maria. My second cousin is Mariya, and spells her name Mariya. (yeah, i know >.>) My grandmother is Mary, and spells her name that way. Technically speaking, it’s the same name, spelled different ways. And i know Mariya is supposed spelled Mariya, but I don’t think it’s right to be giving scanlators a hard time, since it’s not like they changed the name to something else, like Jill. if it’s that much of an issue, then do your own scnalations/subs and fix the name.
And when it comes down to it, it doesn’t really matter. Mariya is still going to be the same character no matter how you spell his name (please note how I have been spelling his name the entire time).
There’s this wonderful invention called furigana/yomigana /rubi which has been widely used since the 19th century, and it serves as a guide on how to pronounce a kanji.
No matter how you try to argue, a wrong translation is a wrong translation, much like how you don’t call a person named “John”, “Yochanan” even though “omg, they are the same name!!!!111one”.
And hint: I’m the translator for gg on both the manga and the anime.
